Nitrile vs Vinyl vs Latex Gloves: What's the Difference?

Author: Clinimate Medikal (corporate content)

· Updated:

Medical gloves are made from materials such as natural rubber latex, nitrile, polyvinyl chloride (PVC, vinyl) and polyurethane. The material determines latex allergy risk, durability and cost.

Comparison table

The table below summarizes general material properties. For exact values for a given product (puncture resistance, chemical permeation, AQL), the manufacturer's technical data sheet applies.

Latex allergy

FDA notes that some people are allergic to the natural rubber latex used in some medical gloves, and in the US it requires manufacturers to state the glove material on the package label. Where staff or patients are latex-sensitive, non-latex materials such as nitrile, vinyl or polyurethane are preferred.

Powder-free gloves

With a final rule published on December 19, 2016, FDA banned powdered surgeon's and patient examination gloves in the US. Powder-free gloves are the standard choice today; when comparing quotes, check on the packaging that the product is powder-free.

What is AQL?

AQL (acceptable quality level) is an acceptance criterion used in the quality control of production lots. When comparing quotes, compare AQL values declared under the same standard and request the technical data sheet.

Glove purchasing checklist

  1. Confirm the material (nitrile, latex, vinyl) on the package label.
  2. Check that the gloves are powder-free.
  3. Plan the size mix (XS–XL) around monthly consumption.
  4. See the quantity per box and boxes per carton in the quote.
  5. Request the AQL value and the technical data sheet.
  6. Check the CE marking and ÜTS registration.

Frequently asked questions

Should a clinic use nitrile or latex gloves?

Where latex allergy is a risk, non-latex materials such as nitrile are preferred; FDA also notes that some people are allergic to natural rubber latex. For durability needs, compare the products' technical data sheets.

Are powdered gloves still used?

In the US, FDA banned powdered surgeon's and patient examination gloves in 2016. Choose powder-free products when buying.

Are vinyl gloves suitable for clinical use?

Vinyl (PVC) is one of the medical glove materials and the most economical option; its elasticity and durability are lower than nitrile. Decide on the task it will be used for based on the values in the product's technical data sheet.
